Sue Arrowsmith follows the long tradition of artists working directly form the landscape by photographing the trees and flora of the English landscape. Yet she is not a landscape painter and her drawings and paintings are rooted in abstraction. In this new exhibition, paintings of various scales present a significant departure from previous strictly monochrome compositions. These new works rise from the shadows to explore the warmth of colours and golden tones.
Working from figurative sources, her compositions reveal the linear structure of the landscape; remaining poised between intensely detailed abstract lines and shapes and the more recognisable forms of the common land.
