John 2nd Duke Montagu 1690-1749 by Charles Jervas. A photograph of the last remaining elm tree from the original avenue in the deer park. Duke John is concealed inside the trunk. He was known as John the Planter and added many more avenues to his father’s established template, stretching far out into the estate, so that he could ride uninterrupted to his daughter’s house a few miles away
