Sue Arrowsmith

Sue Arrowsmith (born 1968, Manchester) follows the long tradition of artists working directly form the landscape by photographing the tees and flora of the English landscape. Yet she is not a landscape painter and her drawings and paintings are rooted in abstraction.

Earlier work focussed on line, warp and weft - repeated almost infinitely across large canvases. Now working from ore figurative sources, the same focus is required to complete them. Her compositions reveal the linear structure of the landscape; remaining poised between intensely detailed abstract lines and shapes and the more recongnizable forms of the common land. Preferring the bold and graphic qualities of black and white the artist works without colour, exploring the different tones and shades that can be achieved.
